                                      Sarah Takes Gold!

(Race report for Pontevedra ITU World Sprint Duathlon from Alan Grover)

27th April 2019-Torrential rain on arrival in Pontevedra ruled out any form of course recces. A drive of the bike course revealed speed-bumps and roundabouts, to a winding 8km uphill out, and a fast looking downhill return via the same route. Sarah was relatively happy with the hard uphill climbs, but not being a speed merchant, her real worry was handling the likely rapid descent.

Race day started early, overcast, but thankfully no sign of rain. With the run being her strongest discipline, Sarah started confidently in the front pack. The run course was 2x 2.5km of twists and turns through the town, and a series of steep inclines thrown in for good measure. A fast running Canadian lead into transition with Sarah 20 secs behind (Run1 18:36, 3rd fastest woman across all age-groups).

Out on the bike course, things got real interesting. Sarah explained – “I got caught half-way up the hill on the bike course by a huge group of athletes with lots of GB girls which made for an exciting/nervous descent – I reached my max ever speed!”

Sarah managed to catch the Canadian just after the turn back, and then crucially managed to drop her on the descent (Bike1 20km 37:58). At least 15 athletes exited T2 close together, out for the final 2.5km run lap. The competiveness of the race wave (F16-44 age-groups) was highlighted by the fact that 7 of the top 8 athletes were to finish the race within 20 secs of each other. Sarah pushed on strongly to run through the group (Run2 10:09) and take the 2019 ITU World Sprint Duathlon Champion F25-29 Gold (total time 1:09:02, finishing 6th fastest woman overall) – a fantastic achievement and great reward for all Sarah’s hard effort and training over the last year.
